    Notable Features:
This necklace was handmade during the Mid Century era. Composed of 14k yellow gold, the necklace features beautiful Akoya pearl beads and gold beads in a station-style necklace. The inclusion of such large, lustrous stones in this necklace is an excellent example of the bold and creative styles of the Mid Century era, which saw jewelers create jewelry using uncommon and colorful stones, as well as incorporating new designs and re-purposing those from the past to craft entirely new pieces of jewelry.
There are a total of fifteen large Akoya pearl beads to this necklace, as the name suggests, would have been hand-harvested off the coast of Japan before being imported to be made into jewelry. Each pearl is cream in hue and displays a stunning luster as light moves across the bead. After being drilled through the middle and polished, the pearls were strung by hand on the wire string. Between each pearl are gold beads, two small round beads, and one long bead. Thus, giving the necklace a station necklace style. The warm hue of the yellow gold beads contrasts beautifully with the lustrous cream hue of the pearls.
This necklace is finished with a 14k yellow gold lobster clasp for secure wear. When worn, the necklace sits above the collarbone against the décolletage on most people. A classic example of Mid Century jewelry, this necklace would make a valuable addition to any antique jewelry collection. Don't miss your chance to preserve this piece of cultural history.
    Damage:
Age appropriate wear. Several of the pearls display natural pitting, which does not affect wear.

    The History
The Mid-Century era, 1935 to 1965, encompassed many new styles of art and architecture and this carried over to jewelry making. This exciting time for jewelry saw movements such as Hollywood Regency, Modernism, Brutalism, and the Atomic Age. Native American artisans were also making their mark in the jewelry industry. Artisans used many kinds of metals, gemstones, glass, and experimented with ceramic and wood as well. This era was filled with new and innovative designs, while also rejuvenating and reinventing older styles. The unique jewelry which emerged from this era is still very popular today.
Akoya saltwater pearls are cultured from the Akoya oyster and can be found primarily in Japan and China. They are known for their beautiful round shape and exquisite luster that sets them apart from many other types of pearls. They are usually white or cream in color but can have rose or silver undertones. During the Art Deco era, Akoya pearls were rare, expensive to own, and reserved for the richest of the rich.
