Talhakimt pendants were produced by both the French and Czech-Bohemian bead industries during the trade bead era, which peaked between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Czech versions were made from molded glass, and came in a variety of colors, including green, red and blue.
French Talhakimts were the brainchild of Jean-Felix Bapterosses, a pioneering button and bead maker. As a young man, Bapterosses traveled to England, where he studied the “Prosser” technique of molding and firing a paste to produce a hard porcelain-like material. Bapterosses returned to France and, after making several improvements to the technique, implemented it at his button and bead factory in Briare. Talhakimt pendants were one of the many items manufactured at the factory.
French Talhakimts, along with their Czech-Bohemian counterparts, were exported mainly to West Africa, where they were believed to have amuletic properties. Mauritanian women wore them in elaborate headdresses, plaited into long braids.
The most spectacular examples of this kind of adornment were found among the dancers of the Guedra, a traditional dance in which women displayed their love for men in ritual form.
Talhakimt pendants such as this were exported to West Africa for the bead trade throughout the course of the 20th century. Originally produced in the bead workshops of Bohemia from Czech Glass, they were molded using the Prosser method and coveted by tribal peoples as a talisman to ward off the evil eye and as part of traditional costumes. The Native American Indians, and before them the Tibetans, and before them the Egyptians were enamored by Turquoise and considered it to have great healing powers. To this day the Native American Indians consider Turquoise to contain very powerful Metaphysical and spiritual healing powers. Most people around the world associate Turquoise to the Native Americans and the Tibetans, but many cultures love Turquoise and respect the healing powers of Turquoise.

It is a peace and harmonizing stone that helps to decrease nervousness, tension and stress. It is believed to strengthen ones courage and personal power, fostering empathy, sensitivity and positive thinking. Many people believe that turquoise is a stone of friendship and will enhance love, loyalty and communication.
Turquoise is perhaps the oldest stone in man’s history, the talisman of kings, shamans, and warriors. It is a stone of protection, strong and opaque, yet soothing to the touch, healing to the eye, as if carved from an azure heaven and slipped to earth. As a healing stone, Turquoise is among the crystal healing master stones. Coral has been called the ‘garden of the sea. It was once believed to be a plant, but is now known to actually contain living animals called polyps. Coral is the result of accumulated skeletal masses from these polyps. Red is considered the most sought after color but coral also can be found in pink, white, yellow and black.
Records dating back thousands of years confirm that coral was used in decorative art objects. It was believed to prevent ill fortune and offer protection from skin disease when worn as a necklace. Dreams about coral are believed to foretell recovery from a long illness. Ancients believed that Mars was composed of red coral.
Coral symbolizes life and blood force energy. Dark red coral is used for heating and stimulating the bloodstream. Pink shades restore harmony to the heart. It is used as an aid to depression, lethargy or deficient nutrition.
Locations where coral can be found include the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Australia, the South Pacific, the waters of Japan, and Africa.
