Description
My husband and I have owned and restored over 1000 antique and vintage Singer sewing machines, and both of us have a special interest in treadle (foot-powered) models. There’s just something fascinating about providing your own power to make something with your machine. We have accumulated a small stock of genuine, antique Singer treadle parts and the parts aren’t doing anyone any good sitting in our workshop, so we have decided to send them on to where they’re needed. Many treadle frames have come to us over the years with missing or improvised fasteners (or sometimes just wired together). Fortunately,
Singer used only two basic methods to connect the two side legs of a treadle frame with its center brace
:
Older treadles were connected by conical-head (tapered head) bolts with nuts, and newer treadles were held together with machine screws.
These bolts and nuts came from a Singer treadle frame with 1884 and 1885 patent dates, but they also fit newer frames. To figure out if they will fit your frame, look for three conical holes drilled through each of your frame’s side legs, two at the top and one at the bottom. The holes will be tapered from the outside to the inside to match the heads of the bolts shown in photo two. Each Singer treadle frame requires four bolts and nuts, and four are included in this set.
The big end of the tapered conical heads of these bolts measure about three-eighths of an inch in diameter, and the bolts are slightly more than one-and-one-quarter inches long. They are in good, original condition, have been cleaned, and are ready to go to work.
