Description
This is a rare "THE CAST" Theatre Guide from the week of August 16th, 1952 (Volume 204, No. 2406) featuring HOLLY HARRIS on the front cover. She had replaced VIVIENNE SEGAL as "Vera" in the Broadway revival of the RICHARD RODGERS and LORENZ HART musical "PAL JOEY" at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York City. (The revival opened January 3rd, 1952 and ran for 540 performances.) ..... The musical starred HAROLD LANG and HOLLY HARRIS and featured HELEN GALLAGHER, LIONEL STANDER, PATRICIA NORTHRUP, BETTY O'NEIL, JACK WALDRON and ROBERT FORTIER ..... CREDITS: Music by RICHARD RODGERS; Lyrics by LORENZ HART (together, the composer and lyricist collaborated on "The Boys From Syracuse", "A Connecticut Yankee", "Babes In Arms", "By Jupiter", "Pal Joey", "I Married An Angel", "I'd Rather Be Right", "Too Many Girls" and "On Your Toes"); Book by JOHN O'HARA; Sets designed by OLIVER SMITH; Costumes designed by MILES WHITE; Choreographed by ROBERT ALTON; Directed by DAVID ALEXANDER; Produced by JULE STYNE and LEONARD KEY in association with ANTHONY B. FARRELL ..... Side Note: August 16th, 1952 (the date of this booklet) was also the date of GERTRUDE LAWRENCE's final performance as "Anna Leonowens" in "THE KING & I". She fainted backstage following the August 16th, 1952 matinee performance and was rushed to the hospital. She died on September 6th, 1952, just three weeks after departing the production. One of her last requests was that Yul Brynner, her leading man in the show, be upgraded in the posters and playbills from below to above-the-title billing, sharing star billing with whomever would play Anna in later performances. She was buried in the pink satin hooped ballgown from this show in which she sang "Shall We Dance?" ..... DETAILS: The 18 page booklet measures 3" X 5 1/2" inches and includes the cast lists and performance details for many of the current Broadway productions. Among the current shows were the Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II musical "THE KING AND I" starring GERTRUDE LAWRENCE, the Frank Loesser musical hit "GUYS and DOLLS" starring ROBERT ALDA, VIVIAN BLAINE, SAM LEVENE and ISABEL BIGLEY, the Harold Rome, Arthur Kober and Joshua Logan musical comedy "WISH YOU WERE HERE" featuring JACK CASSIDY and PHYLLIS NEWMAN, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein's "SOUTH PACIFIC", the James Thurber and Elliott Nugent play "THE MALE ANIMAL" starring ELLIOTT NUGENT, MARTHA SCOTT and ROBERT PRESTON and the Leonard Sillman musical revue "NEW FACES OF 1952" starring EARTHA KITT, ALICE GHOSTLEY and PAUL LYNDE.
