    Description

I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare November 1968 playbill from the Pre-Broadway engagement of the NEIL SIMON, BURT BACHARACH and HAL DAVID musical comedy hit "PROMISES, PROMISES" at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C. (The production would open December 1st, 1968 at the Sam S. Shubert Theatre in New York City and run for 1281 performances.) ..... The musical starred JERRY ORBACH (honored with the 1969 Tony Award for "Best Actor in a Musical"), JILL O'HARA and EDWARD WINTER and featured DONNA McKECHNIE, PAUL REED, DICK O'NEILL, VINCE O'BRIEN, A. LARRY HAINES, MARIAN MERCER, MILLIE SLAVIN, ADRIENNE ANGEL, BARBARA LANG and NORMAN SHELLY ..... CREDITS: Music by BURT BACHARACH; Lyrics by HAL DAVID; Book by NEIL SIMON based on the screenplay "The Apartment" by BILLY WILDER and I. A. L. DIAMOND; Sets designed by ROBIN WAGNER; Costumes designed by DONALD BROOKS; Choreographed by MICHAEL BENNETT; Directed by ROBERT MOORE; Produced by DAVID MERRICK ..... DETAILS: The 70 page playbill measures 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and bios of the leading actors and members of the creative team, but no cast photos ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "Loyal, Resourceful", "Stroke of Luck" and "Whoever You Are" which were cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of light creasing from normal handling, this playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
