    Description

I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare May 7th, 1946 playbill from the five-night, Pre-Broadway engagement of the ORSON WELLES and COLE PORTER musical "AROUND THE WORLD" ("In Eighty Days") at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut. (The production would open May 31st, 1946 at the Adelphi Theatre in New York City and close after only 75 performances.) ..... The cast included ORSON WELLES as "Fu San", ARTHUR MARGETSON, ALAN REED (who would be replaced out-of-town by ORSON WELLES in the role of "Detective Dick Fix"), MARY HEALY, JULIE WARREN, LARRY LAURENCE, JACK CASSIDY, VICTORIA CORDOVA, STEFAN SCHNABEL, GUY SPAULL, BERNARD SAVAGE, ARTHUR COHEN and GORDON WEST ..... CREDITS: Music, Lyrics and Incidental Score by COLE PORTER ("Anything Goes", "Red, Hot and Blue", "Leave It To Me!", "Du Barry Was a Lady", "Panama Hattie", "Can-Can", "Mexican Hayride", "Kiss Me Kate", "Out Of This World", "Silk Stockings"); Book by ORSON WELLES adapted from the novel by JULES VERNE; Sets designed by ROBERT DAVISON; Costumes designed by ALVIN COLT; Choreographed by NELSON BARCLIFT; Orchestra Conducted by HARRY LEVANT; Directed by ORSON WELLES; Produced by THE MERCURY THEATRE and ORSON WELLES ..... DETAILS: The 36 page playbill measures 6 1/8" X 9 1/8" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and wonderful vintage advertising, but no cast photos or bios ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "Missus Aouda" and "Should I Tell You I Love You" which were cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of minor edge wear, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
