I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare January 1964 playbill from the Pre-Broadway tryout of the BUD SCHULBERG and ERVIN DRAKE musical comedy "WHAT MAKES SAMMY RUN?" at the Erlanger Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (The production would open February 27th, 1964 at the 54th Street Theatre in New York City and run for 540 performances.) ..... The musical starred STEVE LAWRENCE, SALLY ANN HOWES and ROBERT ALDA (all three are shown in cover photos) and featured BARRY NEWMAN, VICTOR KILIAN, ARNY FREEMAN, RICHARD FRANCE, GEORGE COE, GRACIELA DANIELE, MACE BARRETT and WALTER KLAVUN ..... CREDITS: Book by BUDD and STUART SCHULBERG based on the novel by BUDD SCHULBERG; Music and Lyrics by ERVIN DRAKE ("Her First Roman"); Sets designed by HERBERT SENN and HELEN POND; Costumes designed by NOEL TAYLOR; Directed by ABE BURROWS; Produced by JOSEPH CATES ..... DETAILS: The 42 page playbill measures 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and bios of each of the leading actors but with the exception of the front cover, no cast photos. Includes a full page ad for the Original Broadway Cast recording of "WHAT MAKES SAMMY RUN?" (available soon) on Columbia Records ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "Bachelor Girl", "A New Boy" and "Sweetie" which were cut in Philadelphia ..... CONDITION: With the exception of light edge wear, this playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard .....
