    Description

This is a rare April 1977 playbill from the Broadway revival of the musical revue "A PARTY WITH COMDEN AND GREEN" at the Little Theatre in New York City. (The revival opened February 10th, 1977 at the Morosco Theatre, moved on March 22nd, 1977 to the Little Theatre and ran for 92 performances.) ..... Following a series of successful Monday night shows at the Off-Broadway Cherry Lane Theatre in 1958, the brilliant collaborating team of BETTY COMDEN and ADOLPH GREEN took their show to New York's Golden Theatre, where a planned three-week engagement was extended from December 23rd, 1958 through May 23rd, 1959 due to overwhelming demand. Performing songs from their early Night Club Act ("The Revuers") as well as their successful Broadway shows, this revised edition also starred Comden and Green who were accompanied by PAUL TRUEBLOOD at the piano ..... Biographical note: The team of BETTY COMDEN (
    1917 - 2006) and
    ADOLPH GREEN
(1915 - 2002) were the longest running creative partnership in theatre history. They began writing and performing their own satirical comic material in a group called "The Revuers", which included the late Judy Holliday. They went on to collaborate with Leonard Bernstein and Jerome Robbins on what was the first Broadway show for all four, "On the Town". Also with Mr. Bernstein, they wrote the lyrics for "Wonderful Town"
and with Jule Styne, the book and/or lyrics for "Bells Are Ringing", "Do Re Mi", "Subways Are For Sleeping", "Fade Out - Fade In", "Hallelujah, Baby!" and others. They won five Tony Awards for the musicals "Wonderful Town", "Applause", "Hallelujah, Baby!" and "On the Twentieth Century". The Comden and Green film musicals include "Singin' in the Rain", "The Band Wagon", "On the Town", "Bells Are Ringing", "It's Always Fair Weather", "Good News", "Auntie Mame" and "The Barkleys of Broadway". "Singin' in the Rain" was recently voted as one of the ten best American movies ever made by a vote of international film critics conducted by the prestigious magazine "Sight and Sound". As performers, Comden and Green were members of the Original Broadway Cast of "On the Town", and later did an evening at New York's Golden Theatre, "A Party with Betty Comden and Adolph Green", comprised of material from their own shows and films as well as their act, "The Revuers". In 1977 they did a new version of "A Party" to unanimous acclaim at the Morosco Theatre and later toured throughout the country. (Source: Songwriters Hall of Fame) .....
